Polish Community in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania has one of the largest and most historic Polish-American populations in the United States. Polish immigration to Pennsylvania began in the mid-1800s, with major settlements in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and the anthracite coal mining regions of northeastern Pennsylvania.
Historical Significance
Pennsylvania holds a special place in Polish-American history:
- 1880 - The Polish National Alliance (PNA) was founded in Philadelphia on February 15, 1880, under the influence of Polish patriot Agaton Giller
- Alliance College was established in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania, to educate children of Polish immigrants
- By 1925, the PNA had 220,000 members nationwide and published Zgoda (Harmony), a daily newspaper
