About Polish Michigan
Polish immigrants began arriving in Michigan in significant numbers in the late 1800s, drawn by jobs in the automotive industry, manufacturing, and other industries. Today, significant Polish communities thrive in Detroit, Hamtramck, Grand Rapids, Bay City, Alpena, Jackson, Saginaw, and beyond.
Detroit and Hamtramck
The neighborhood on the near eastside of Detroit around Chene Street, and the city of Hamtramck, were “the” early vibrant centers of Polish life and remain cultural hubs today.
